Samsung Pixon M8800 Goes Official in Russia, Reviewed

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

According to mobile-review, Samsung M8800 has been officially announced today, as what we heard in the rumor. It is not branded as Samsung Bresson series though (could be a codename), Samsung M8800 is the first Pixon series which you will see more products coming up next year with high megapixel camera capability. Mobile-Review has now posted their review in english.

The Samsung Pixon M8800 is a Quadband GSM phone, it supports HSDPA connection, GPS but do not have a built in WiFi. The built in GPS is being limited in its functionality though, you can use it in geo-tagging your photo but can not be used for GPS Navigation according to mobile-review. The 8 megapixel camera module is able to record video in either 720×480 pixels (30 FPS), VGA (30 FPS) or QVGA (120 FPS) resolution. A flash LED is can be used in low light condition. Here is the summary on its 8 megapixel camera module.

Since the Samsung M8800 is one of the most affordable 8 Mpix solutions around, it wouldn’t surprise us if its camera was somewhat subpar. However, it holds its own against the Sony Ericsson C905 and even manages to offer slightly juicier colors, and more aggressive image processing algorithms (the same thing that Nokia does with its imaging-centric phones). However, the M8800 tends to focus on the central part of the image, and doesn’t provide the same level of detail for the background and flanks. All in all, we couldn’t pick the winner, even after taking a series of shots with these phones - neither of them had a perfect score

Running a similar native Samsung OS as Samsung F480, TouchWiz UI is available on the 3.2-inch WQVGA display screen (240 x 400). There are up to 20 widgets available for you to add them on the display screen. There are also 4 overlay shortcut buttons at the bottom of touch screen, allow you to quickly activate the functions you need. Unlike Samsung Omnia, M8800 do not have the virtual QWERTY keyboard.

The Samsung Pixon M8800 will start shipping as early as November 10th and cost about 550 euro.
